In the early days of existence, Led Zeppelin were a straight up blues band. Those first two albums are full of standards and extensions of existing songs. So much so, that they were successfully sued for 'heavily borrowing' from older blues tunes. "The Girl I Love She Got Long Black Wavy Hair" does exactly that. The music is what was used for the John Bonham concert centerpiece "Moby Dick", which is also on Led Zeppelin II. The lyrics come mainly from an old Sleepy John Estes song, and include other known lines.

This song saw the light of day in 1997 with the release of The BBC Sessions. That compilation featured recordings from 1969 and 1971. The later session is interesting because they were starting to play stuff from their fourth album, including "Stairway to Heaven," maybe you've heard of it?

The earlier sets showcase the world's greatest bar band. I can picture myself walking in to a small place hearing this stuff. Like an updated version of an old juke joint. Yesterday marked the forty-sixth anniversary of the first show with the Zep line-up. The band only performed this once and here it is:
