Advice From Illinois State Police For Cold Weather And Vehicles

Cold weather advice for your vehicle from the Illinois State Police.

I've talked about it several times. Fall is my favorite season. There's football, Halloween, hoodie weather, leaves changing colors, apples, pumpkins, and so much more. Like anything, there's of course pros and cons to autumn.

One thing I don't like is when it starts getting cold. Especially, as I get older. I can't take it like I used to. When I was younger, I could wear shorts all year. Not anymore. The thermometer hits below freezing, I'm not happy.

I get up early for my radio show and it's even chillier in the morning before the sun comes up. I'm usually halfway to work before my car warms up. We have three vehicles with a two-car garage. If I'm the unlucky one that's stuck parking outside, then that means scraping the ice off my windows. I hate doing that. On days like that, I wish I had a remote start.

When the weather gets cold like that, it's very tempting to warm up my car before I leave. What's the harm of letting it run while I eat breakfast? Well, some may disagree and you might want to pay attention.

Here's a little advice from the Illinois State Police that they posted on their Facebook page.

"Don’t leave your car running, unlocked, and with the keys in the ignition when you run into a store, school, work, or home."

"Don’t jump in a car that is not yours that you find running, unlocked, with the keys in the ignition, and then drive off into the sunset."

Those are actually a couple of great rules to live by. Every winter, many cars are stolen that way. Also, I knew a guy in college that thought it was a good idea to take a pizza delivery guy's car instead of walking home in the cold. He ended up in jail.

Just remember after a couple of weeks, you'll be used to the cold again. It's no reason to get caught up in trouble.
