Meet The Wilt Chamberlain of Tortoises

One very sexually active tortoise helped save his entire species in the process.

Diego the 100-year-old giant tortoise, Chelonoidis Hoodensis, is the one being credited for keeping his kind from extinction simply by "getting busy".

Diego is said to be heading into retirement by being released back into the wild. He's been quite the busy guy so I'd say he's earned the R&R.

The much-desired reptile was the part of a breeding program that began in the 1970s on Santa Cruz Island in the Galapagos. At the time of the start of the sex saving campaign there were only two male tortoises and 12 females. There are close to 2,000 now.

Out of the breeding program, Diego had the most gusto as it is said he is the patriarch to about 40% of those now 2,000 tortoises.
