Strange Theft In Illinois As Man Steals Manhole Covers
Thieves in Illinois will steal just about anything and everything, but this latest target has me baffled.
Illinois Police Finally Captured A Serial Manhole Cover Thief
Stealing manhole covers off the streets of Illinois isn't something I ever thought of before. In fact, I had never even heard of it happening until a couple of years ago. There are just too many negatives. They are hard to remove and very heavy. The suspect would have to avoid getting hit by cars, and oh yeah, they're out in the middle of plain sight. Where are they going to sell them off? Scrap yards are going to know they're stolen.
According to Patch Joliet...
The Joliet Police Department has made its first manhole arrest of the year.
Over the course of two days, five manhole covers were stolen throughout Joliet. Think about how dangerous that can be for drivers and pedestrians. I would like to see one of these thieves in action. The police started an investigation and were able to find some clues and connections. At one of the nearby crime scenes, a grocery store also reported that some metal display racks had been stolen, too.

The store had security camera footage of the suspected thief. The racks and manhole cover had been stolen by the same guy. From the video, they were able to track down the thief. He admitted to all the crimes, so he'll be going away for a while.
