Potential Contamination: Target Recalls Baby Wipes In Illinois
We see and hear about product recalls all the time, but when the word "baby" is included in a recall notice, it gets a lot of attention (and for good reason).
As a parent myself, I know that anything, and I mean anything, that could negatively affect the health of your baby immediately jumps to the top of the priority list. You can shrug off a lot of things when it comes to yourself, but when there's even a hint of danger involving your child, that's a different story altogether. That's why a new nationwide recall involving baby wipes sold at Target has many parents taking a closer look at what's in the diaper bag.
Target has voluntarily recalled certain lots of its Up & Up brand baby wipes after customer complaints about discoloration led to testing that identified possible bacterial contamination. The affected products include both Up & Up Fragrance Free Baby Wipes and Up & Up Fresh Cucumber Scented Baby Wipes sold in stores and online nationwide.
What Does Bacterial Contamination Mean In This Product Recall?
According to the recall notice, testing detected the presence of Burkholderia cepacia complex and Burkholderia gladioli, which are bacteria that can potentially cause serious infections.
While healthy individuals may face a lower risk, infants, young children, newborns, and people with weakened immune systems are considered especially vulnerable. In severe cases, infections could lead to conditions such as pneumonia or even sepsis.
The recall affects multiple package sizes and lot numbers manufactured between late 2025 and early 2026. Parents who purchased these wipes are being urged to stop using them immediately and either dispose of them or return them to a Target store for a full refund.
The good news is that recalls like this show the system working as intended. Customer complaints were reported, testing was conducted, and the products were pulled from shelves before more widespread problems could occur. Still, that's little comfort for parents who may have already used the wipes on their children.
If you've recently purchased Up & Up baby wipes, now might be a good time to check the package before the next diaper change.
