It’s Illegal To Give Weed As A Gift For Christmas In Illinois

This Christmas, don't give marijuana as a present because it's against the law.

I realize pot enthusiasts are very excited for legal recreational marijuana in Illinois starting January 1st, 2020. If that describes you, I would like to remind you to not jump the gun on the new law. Even though the gift of cannabis seems like the perfect present for that stoner on your Christmas list, it's currently illegal in our state to do so.

According to chicagotribune.com,

"Consumers can’t legally give weed as a gift only medical marijuana patients can shop for cannabis in Illinois, and they’re not allowed to give away what they purchase."

It will just have to wait until next year.

If you had your heart set on putting pot under somebody's tree, here's an idea for a substitution gift. Many Illinois "smoke shops" are stocking up on accessories to go along with the new law. That might be a potential stocking stuffer.
