You Now Have to Be 21 to Buy Cigarettes in This Illinois City

If you are heading to this big city, you will now have to be 21-years-old to purchase cigarettes starting this week.

Starting Friday, July, 1st, if you are in Chicago and want to purchase cigarettes, you have to be over the age of 21 according to the Chicagoist.

This doesn't come as a surprise to me. Youth smoking is at a record low and this is just one more measure Chicago is taking to continue the non-smoking trend.

If you remember, the law passed City Council in March but it is just now going into effect.

Chicago isn't the first to raise the legal smoking age.

Cottonwood, Arizona; Evanston, Illinois; Boston and at least ten other Massachusetts cities; eight cities in Kansas and more have raised the legal age to purchase cigarettes to 21.
