WI Building Owner Uncovers Stolen Picasso Worth $50K

A valuable work of art that had been missing for years was finally discovered by a rental building owner in Wisconsin after the tenant was evicted and he was cleaning out the apartment.

A couple of friends and I worked for an apartment rental company one summer while going to Illinois State. One of our jobs was to clean out the apartments after the students moved out. We couldn't believe some of the stuff that the renters would leave behind. I guess they might have been in a hurry to leave. Unfortunately, we never found anything really valuable.

The man who found the stolen Picasso etching exclusively told WISN 12 News on Friday he found it inside a Bay View building and turned it over to Milwaukee police.

"It was in a back bedroom behind a door," Timothy Dertz said. "A very odd placement for such a piece of art. I guess we know why now."

I couldn't even imagine being an apartment building owner in a big city. Having to deal with tenants doesn't sound like a fun time. All of the maintenance work would suck too. A building owner in Milwaukee was cleaning out an apartment after an eviction. It was pretty much a normal situation until he found a unique painting on the wall that was left behind.

The apartment building owner thought the painting looked valuable, so he took it to a local antique dealer that he knew. That's when he found out his intuition was correct. The work of art was very valuable. It was an etching print that was created by the famous artist, Pablo Picasso. It had been stolen from an art gallery in Milwaukee eight years ago and was never found. It is valued at $50,000. The local police are currently investigating the situation.
