While living in the suburbs of Chicago many years ago, I decided if I ever needed to get downtown, Metra was the way to go. Whether a Cubs game, the Shedd, or visiting with friends, I'd much rather use public transportation than make the drive myself. Plus, if you've ever gone to Chicago for New Year's Eve, you know it's a night you don't want to be driving anyways.

Well, if you're making plans to go to Chicago for New Year's Eve, your travel costs are going to be reduced. For the first time in their history, Metra is offering free train rides after 6 p.m. on New Year's Eve until 1:10 - 1:25 a.m. depending on what line you're using according to NBC 5.

They are also giving discounted rates for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. For just $10 you can have unlimited rides and on New Year's Day unlimited rides for just $5. Metra hasn't forgotten about visiting families for the holiday season as its Family Fare deals will be from December 23rd - January 5th. It allows 3 kids 11 and under to ride with each paying adult.

Be safe this holiday season if you have plans to go to Chicago and avoid the congestion of the highways. To grab more info just visit Metra's website.
