There was no bigger rock 'n roll party than the annual New Year's Eve concerts thrown by the Grateful Dead. They would usually do a run of shows in their native San Francisco and cap it off with a few long energy-packed NYE sets that would include a big, obnoxious countdown.

They closed the famous Winterland Ballroom on the final day of 1978, with The Blues Brothers opening up:

Legendary concert promoter Bill Graham flew over the crowd on a giant joint dubbed the USS Colombian for the 1981 NYE show:

In 1987, Jerry Garcia invited the world to his Backstage Kitchen, where he showed the world how to prepare for a sober, good natured, family style New Year's Eve celebration. By the way, the interviewer is Saturday Night Live writer Tom Davis.
