It's crazy how much things have changed since I was a kid growing up in Illinois. My friends and I always looked forward to summertime. Of course, we were off of school but we also really enjoyed the freedom.

We were all latchkey kids so our summer days were full of adventures. The main rule from most parents from where I grew up was to play outside. It's funny because we didn't care about being inside with air conditioning.
There were so many fun things to do outdoors, we were all about it. When the temperatures skyrocketed, we could find plenty of things to keep us cool. One of our favorite things to do was go to the local public pool. It was the hangout for kids our age.
At the pool, there was a snack bar. It was an extra special day when one of us had a couple of bucks to purchase a treat. My go-to item was Italian ice. It would cool you down but not melt super fast. It was quite the combination.
