No longer will you be able to cross the 3rd Street Bridge.

Don't tell my sister. She is so afraid of bridges to begin with, this could just shatter her. I'll break it to her gently.

Starting on March 19th, the North 3rd Street bridge connecting to Whitman Street will be closed.

Before the closure, a detour using Jefferson and Main Streets will be signed. North 6th Street which passes under the bridge will remain open.

According to RockRiverTimes.com the reason for the closure is because of structural deterioration. It has been found unsafe by the Rockford Department of Public Works and City Engineer Matthew Vitner. He released a statement saying "There are no current plans to repair this structure as the Department investigates the best design solutions for this location."
