RPS 205 wants to know "What would you name the two new Rockford schools?"

Yes, they really want to hear what you have to say.

According to WREX, the Rockford Public School board is asking the community for its help in naming the two new elementary schools that are under construction.

They will be "holding two community meetings to get input. The first is Wednesday, Nov. 29 at 6:30 p.m. at Flinn Middle School and the next meeting is Thursday, Nov. 30 at 6:30 p.m. at the RPS Administration Building in the 3rd floor board room, 501 7th St."

The discussions for naming both facilities will continue at a special committee meeting on December 5th and the names for each school could be decided in late December or this coming January.

If you would like to participate, here are the guidelines for entering your names for consideration:

"According to RPS 205 school board policy, a name can only be considered if it has at least 50 signatures. Name can include people, historical landmarks and geographic locations. If a person's name is submitted, school board policy states that person must have been deceased for at least 2 years. [All} petitions must be submitted at the Board of Education Office at the Administration Building at 501 7th Street by 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 28, to be considered."

Currently, the RPS board is leaning heavily towards naming the Cherry Valley school after a former resident and veteran, Leonard B. Keller and it was also noted that the board is considering naming one of the two after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

However, with that said your names still have merit and strong consideration with the board.

This is your chance to let your voice be heard.
