Are parents abusing their children by getting their ears pierced at a very young age?

In the United Kingdom, over 30,000 people and counting are signing a petition to try to ban baby ear piercing. Susan Ingram started the petition on her personal blog stating that the practice is 'cruelty' to children, it serves no purpose to the child other than vanity in the parent's eyes and doesn't allow children to make the choice themselves.

I shook my head while I read the original article that was on Buzzfeed. I found it to be complete nonsense.

I don't know about you, but I was an infant when I had my ears pierced. I love having my ears pierced. I remember being young and wearing fun, special earrings and enjoying it. I appreciate that my mom had it done, in the doctors office, when I was young.

I felt zero pain. None that I remember anyways.

When I was 18-years-old, I got my ears pierced again above the original piercings so that I could have my ears double pierced. That I hated. They are crooked, got infected multiple times and it honestly didn't hurt as bad as I thought it would.

Susan Ingram wants to ban piercing for children's ears and at least make it law that children can't get their ears pierced until a certain age.

If you want to limit the age on when you can get your ears pierced, fine. Limit it like drinking or smoking or gambling, but don't believe that everyone is going to follow suit. If limiting the age is the route you want to take, how young is too young?

I personally don't see anything wrong with getting your child's ears pierced, professionally, in a doctors office at a young age. Period.

I was curious on how others felt about the situation, and my friends brought up good points.

Michelle had her ears pierced when she was young. As an adult, she doesn't wear earrings because "I think I look like a hooker."  She went on to say that if she doesn't want to wear earrings, then she doesn't have to. It's still her choice, but she has the option.

Leah didn't get her's done until she was five, which was her decision. She understands what people say on both sides of the issue. She did say piercing your ears in permanent. So is circumcising your male children. Yes, the two are a bit different, but both permanent. Do we need to limit the age of circumcision too so that male children could have a choice on what they want their thingy to look like?

What do you think? Should it be banned? Should there be an age limit? Let me know in the comments below.
