When you think of donating in terms of the medical field, you probably think of donating blood or even plasma. But have you ever thought about donating breast milk? Honestly, I never even knew that donating breast milk was a thing, but its incredibly important.

August is National Breastfeeding Awareness Month and a local nurse wants to remind Rockford about the importance of breastfeeding. Apparently there is a greater demand for breast milk during the Covid-19 pandemic. So if you're a mom and you can, it's really important you donate.

"NICUs in particular have premature babies and they have ill babies that need breast milk," says Nichole Thurman, a registered nurse at SwedishAmerican. "The breast milk is their medicine. It is life-saving medicine for them."

Reading that really made me understand the importance of donating. It helps save new baby's lives! SwedishAmerican teamed up with Mothers' Milk Bank of Western Great Lakes to open a human milk bank depot last December.
