The Boys Scouts announced they will be dropping the word "boy" from their name.

I spent some time as a Cub Scout.

Many boys have been either a Cub Scout or Boy Scout.

For girls, it was joining the Brownies and Girl Scouts.

Now things are changing.

Girls are going to be allowed to join the Boy Scouts.

What does that mean for the organization?

According to usatoday.com,

"For 108 years, the Boy Scouts of America’s flagship program has been known simply as the Boy Scouts. With girls soon entering the ranks, the group says that iconic name will change."

Yes, you read that correctly. The Boys Scouts will be changing their name.

The word "boy" will be dropped and they will become Scouts BSA.

Here are some reasons for the changes.

  • They believe all youth should be allowed to enjoy the same scouting experience.
  • Numbers are down.
  • Allows busy families to consolidate programs for their kids.

The Girl Scouts are not happy about the new competition.

Even though it does seem weird right now, times are changing. Children should be allowed to enjoy the experience that makes them happy.

Maybe in the future, the two organizations can combine and just be considered "The Scouts." It opens many different opportunities for them.
