"I'll only be a minute. It'll be OK because there are other open handicap spots." That thought process could cost you a hefty fine if you're caught. And, the odds of being caught will increase during the holiday shopping season.

Illinois Secretary of State Police made their presence felt all over that state by checking up on random cars parked in handicap spaces. In fact, they cited more than 20 drivers for illegal parking.

23 citations were issued to drivers for illegally parking in a space designated for the disabled.

The good news is most people followed the rules. Out of 1,500+ vehicles checked across Illinois, only 23 were breaking the law. But remember, the fine for illegally parking in a handicap spot could cost you up to $600. So think before you use a designated handicap parking space.
