The 37th Annual National Peace Officers' Memorial Service took place today and one of our very own, Jaimie Cox, was honored.

Being that I have only been here for a few months I never had the pleasure of meeting Officer Cox, but I have heard plenty. Every person I have spoken to holds Cox in the highest regard.

According to Officer Down Memorial Page, "Patrol Officer Jaimie Cox was killed during a traffic stop near the intersection of East State Street and Dawn Avenue at approximately 1:00 am. The vehicle attempted to flee during the incident and dragged Officer Cox before crashing two blocks North of the initial incident. Despite suffering critical injuries, Officer Cox was able to call for assistance. Responding officers found him on the ground near the crash scene. He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries."

Before serving with the Rockford Police Department, Cox, served with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources - Division of Law Enforcement, and he was a veteran of the U.S. National Guard. He was a true patriot receiving honors including an Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, and the Combat Infantryman Badge for his service in Afghanistan. He was also awarded the Illinois National Guard Abraham Lincoln Medal of Freedom Ribbon.

Thank you for your service, and for making the ultimate sacrifice serving your community.
