The Illinois Commerce Commission announced on Wednesday a new area code is coming to southern Illinois.

 

The new area code is 730. It will “overlay” the existing 618 area code to address the depletion of prefixes available for assignment within the region.

 

With the invention of the cellphone, many more phone numbers are needed. That's why new area codes are being added. In fact, the residents of Illinois will get another one on July 7th, 2023.
