Illinois’ Beloved Candy Bar Disappeared Leaving Sweet Memories Behind
The 1970s saw the emergence of the Marathon Bar as a popular candy choice throughout the United States.
The Marathon Bar gained massive popularity throughout the United States during the 1970s and became widely recognized in Illinois. Mars, Inc. launched the Marathon Bar into the candy market in 1973 where it set itself apart as an exceptional treat. Kids and adults became fans of the Marathon Bar because of its unique braided caramel appearance covered in milk chocolate and its fun branding approach. I loved it because it took quite a long time to eat so it was almost like getting three candy bars for the price of one.
Marathon Bar's Popularity in Illinois
Due to its strong food industry ties and dynamic community culture Illinois wholeheartedly embraced the Marathon Bar. During the rise of snack food popularity local stores displayed the Marathon Bar's bright red packaging which promised "long-lasting chew."
The candy bar became more popular through marketing campaigns which highlighted its eight-inch length and entertaining "Marathon Man" commercials. Illinois children would compete to see who could extend their experience with the chewy caramel bar the longest before it disappeared.

The Decline and Lasting Legacy
The Marathon Bar ended production in 1981 because rising costs and evolving consumer tastes led to its discontinuation despite its original success. The Marathon Bar maintains its legacy through the cherished memories of people who experienced its popularity. People in Illinois fondly remember the Marathon Bar as they tell tales about enjoying the candy on summer days or celebrating the moment they found one at their neighborhood shop.
The Marathon Bar disappeared from shelves decades ago yet its significant influence on Illinois candy culture during the 1970s persists.
