Governor JB Pritzker has erased nearly 500,000 criminal records that are cannabis-related for those in Illinois. Starting in 2021, he's cleared Illinois non-felony cases along with 9,219 low-level cannabis convictions.

This all started back in 2019 when Pritzker signed the legislation that led to legalizing recreational marijuana use beginning in 2020. That then allowed for almost 770,000 Illinoisans to have their marijuana-related offenses expunged from their records.

While Pritzker believes the whole process could take up to four years to completely go through all the cases, 2021 is off to a good start with this 500,000 being already thrown out.

“But we can govern with the courage to admit the mistakes of our past — and the decency to set a better path forward.”

Illinois has until January of 2025 to expunge all 492,192 cannabis arrest records with 102 of the state's counties having now 4 years to complete.
