Illinois Peeps, Here’s How to See the Status of Your Facebook Money
By now, I'm sure you heard about those delicious Facebook checks that started popping up in mailboxes across Illinois.
Wait, what? You didn't? Well, let me give you the Cliff's Notes version of why people in Illinois are getting money from Facebook.
It turns out a Class Action Lawsuit was filed in Illinois against Facebook claiming the social media giant broke the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act.
The verdict didn't happen overnight, as it's been something that has been ongoing for over seven years.
Considering it's an actual settlement, Facebook is free from admitting that they did anything wrong, but folks in Illinois will receive a nice little payday for their innocence.
In order to be eligible for the payout, the Facebook BIPA Class Action website says "Facebook users located in Illinois who appeared in a picture uploaded to Facebook after June 7, 2011, may be entitled to a payment from this settlement."
The deadline to sign up has long passed, the claim date ended in late November 2020.
Now I know it's only been about a year and a half ago, but I can't remember for the life of me if I actually signed up.
I have a feeling I'm not the only one either. So while Facebook cash has been flooding mailboxes across the state, some of us have yet to get a check.
So I called to see for myself, and this is what I found out:
Not all checks are out yet. The Facebook funds started getting sent out on May 9, and the settlement administrator's phone number mentioned that the checks could take up to two weeks to end up in your mailbox.
If after May 23, two weeks after the checks originally started getting sent out, and your mailbox remains empty, the word is to remain patient. The recorded voice message also told me payouts could come as late as mid-June.
