Former Rockford Mayor John McNamara Passes at 81
Wednesday the City of Rockford made the announcement that former Rockford Mayor John McNamara, father of the current mayor Tom McNamara, had passed away at the age of 81.
Before he severed his city he served his country in Vietnam for the U.S. Army from 1964 to 1966. He received a Bronze Star and then became an assistant public defender in Winnebago County.
McNamara served as 3rd Ward Alderman in 1974. He was also the president of the New American Theatre.
From 1984 to 1989 he served as mayor of the City of Rockford.
John married Barbra on June 26, 1965, and they had six children. Three daughters and three sons, the youngest Tom being the current mayor of Rockford.
My father was a true servant leader. He served his family, his country and his community,” “He has been my greatest influence in how I’ve lived my life, how I’ve helped lead our great city and how I want my children to live their lives.”
To honor Mayor John McNamara, his love of Rockford, and belief in its people City Hall and the Morgan Street Bridge will be lit in multiple colors starting October 1st through the 8th. Visitation plans will be announced soon.
