I've always joked around that if you held in mouth gas too long it would turn into butt gas, but that was mainly because I enjoy burping and that was my excuse for letting them go.

It seems now that a recent study proves I was sorta right. Or at least on to something.

Let's be real, everyone farts. To not say it, would be ridiculous!

But since we're being honest about it, one can't simply let 'em rip whenever the urge arises either.

So what happens if you're in a situation that causes you to "hold it in"?

According to Professor in Nutrition and Dietetics at the University of Newcastle, Clare Collins:

A build up of intestinal gas can trigger abdominal distension, with some gas reabsorbed into the circulation and exhaled in your breath."

Yep, by trying to hold in a fart, the gas could then leave through your mouth.

Collins states that if you try to hold your fart in for too long it leads to a build-up of pressure and intestinal gas that will eventually need to escape your body in an uncontrollable fart.

That sounds awful embarrassing to me.

Maybe next time you're in a situation where you gotta cut the cheese, excuse yourself to a more private location so you can clear the air.
