My dad grew up on the northside of Chicago, so he never left anything unlocked. He didn't trust the situation. Even if we were home, the doors of the house were locked. The car doors were locked even in the locked garage. He had an old car that the locks didn't work quite right. Someone ended up stealing his eight track player, and that just proved his point. Nothing was ever left in that car ever again.

The vast majority of vehicle break-ins happen because doors are left completely unlocked. These aren't high-tech heists, they're literally just someone walking down the street pulling on unlocked door handles.

I followed those rules myself, I believe it helped me out. I never leave anything valuable out in the open in my vehicle. Of course, I always lock it too. You can't stop every thief, but you can discourage them. Some thieves will just walk around neighborhoods and try random car doors to see if they're unlocked. If they're not, the criminals will move on to the next one. I can't believe how many people don't follow that simple rule, and then they wonder why stuff gotten stolen out of their vehicle.
