I know it's probably hard to believe but growing up I joined the scouts for a short while. It's a fun club to be a part of but unfortunately, that wasn't my type of thing. I'm not much into the outdoors thing or camping, especially back in those days.

There was one annual event that I really enjoyed and got into each year as a scout. That was the pinewood derby. That was something that my dad and I bonded over. That made the whole scouting thing worth being a member for that short time.

If you're not familiar with a pinewood derby, you definitely missed out. Luckily, there's an opportunity to participate in one coming up in Wisconsin. You don't even have to be in scouts to participate. Any kids are allowed in the competition.

To participate in a pinewood derby, you need a car to race. The cool thing is that you make it yourself. A kit is provided which includes a block of wood and wheels. Then, you create your own design for the upcoming race. I remember my dad and I coming up with some pretty cool cars.

The pinewood derby race is going to be held on September 1st at the Walworth County Fairgrounds. $5,000 in cash will be given away that day for successful drivers. That's not a bad little payday. If you've never done it, I highly suggest checking it out. From designing your own car to the races, it will be a big smile on your face.
