It's the middle of October, it's getting darker earlier, there's a chill in the air and it's the perfect time to check out the best haunted houses in Illinois.

ABC7 shares a list from FrightFind.com that chose the top haunted houses that you must see this Halloween season.

Some of these places are closer to Rockford than others. However, if you don't mind a drive to get your scare on and adrenaline pumping then some of these places will be well worth your journey.

Here are top five scariest destinations to get your scream.

Pekin Haunt in Pekin, IL - The Pekin Paintball Park is transformed into a zombie battleground. Participants ride a double-decker "battlewagon" through the grounds are with paintball guns to shoot the wandering 'undead' beings.

Basement of the Dead in Aurora, IL - This is "said to be America’s Scariest Haunted House" complete with insane asylum escapees, "disorienting spinning tunnels" and "oozing body parts strewn about through the fog"

Haunted Infirmary in Bartonville, IL - Visitors will get to walk through the "thought to be abandoned" old state hospital that has mad scientists, demons, evil spirits, and victims of doom in the infirmary.

Statesville Haunted Prison Romeoville, IL -  visitors will tour 23 haunted cells and meet many scary and unsavory characters along the way.

Spook Hollow in Marquette Heights, IL - It's known as the "longest running “Outdoor Haunted Attraction” in Illinois." They've been scaring the pants off, pee out and more from us for 40 years. Here you will experience three terrifying events with their 'Trilogy of Terror' all for the price of one admission.
