1984 was a good year to be a Deep Purple fan. Their classic 'Mark II' line-up reunited that year to record their first album together in eleven years. It was also the first studio album, regardless of line-up, that Deep Purple had released in nine years. Perfect Strangers came out in the summer and returned a tough sound back to rock radio. The '80's were saturated with drum machines, synthesizers and androgynous singers. Deep Purple featured a killer back end with Roger Glover (bass) and Ian Paice (drums), Jon Lord's thunderous organ sounds and Ian Gillan's powerful voice. Ritchie Blackmore's guitar work is more than capable of filling in the rest of the soundscape.

Three singles were released from the album, with the title track being the first. It reached #12 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. Blackmore has described the song "Perfect Strangers" as being his favorite Deep Purple song. A song with no real guitar solo.
