If you are looking to get out of Rockford for a long weekend, this small town is just a short drive away.

I like to say, "sometimes you need to just blow the stink off you." That means I need to get out of Rockford for a couple of days.

I'm always looking for neat little places to take the family for a long weekend. If possible I like to stay within a couple of hours from home, because I don't want to spend half the time in the car. I also look for a place where I can get some rest but also have things to do so we don't get bored.

If you're looking for the same kind of adventure, I have a suggestion for you. You should check out Galena.

It's a short 90-minute cruise down US-20 from Rockford. This time of the year it's a beautiful drive with the fall colors. Plus, there some great little towns to stop at along the way.

According to msn.com,

"Galena is one of the top 40 charming cities you've never heard of."

The Reason for that honor is...

"The historic charm of this mining town's six-block Main Street will make you feel like you took a time machine to a different decade. After you conquer downtown, must-see attractions include the Old Market House and the Historical Society and Museum."

If you decide to make the trip there and you want to spend the night, you might want to stay at the Desoto House Hotel.

According to msn.com,

"The Desoto House Hotel is the oldest hotel in Illinois."

About the hotel...

"The architecture and design of the DeSoto House Hotel feel just as glamorous as they did in the 1850s.Guests are encouraged to take a self-guided walking tour of the property, and the hotel also offers a video detailing the hotel's history. With stunning Victorian-inspired interiors, it's no surprise that the hotel is a popular wedding venue."

I've been to Galena several times. It's laid back, so you can get some rest. Plus, there's a lot of funs things to check out like stores, restaurants, and bars.

If you're looking for Halloween activities they also have Matthew's Haunted Pub Crawl.

There's something for the whole family. I hope you decide to go check it out.
