Grocery shopping during a pandemic is a real struggle, but I have to give huge props to all of our Stateline-area grocery stores who are working their hardest to keep the shelves stock and our shopping experience safe. They don't deserve our crappy, frustrated attitudes, they deserve our gratitude, but that's a conversation for a different day.

Let's get back to the point at hand; Meijer has announced  they will extending their hours effective today, (May 15), to give people more time to shop, and I'm assuming to alleviate some congestion as our community begins to reopen.

According to a press release on Meijer's website;

  • Meijer stores will close overnight at midnight local time, beginning Friday, May 15, and will open each morning at 6 a.m. local time.
  • Meijer Express convenience store locations will close overnight at 11 p.m. and open each morning at 6 a.m.; pay-at-the-pump fuel sales will remain available 24 hours a day.
  • Meijer stores will extend dedicated shopping times for senior citizens and customers with chronic health conditions on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-8 a.m. local time. Pharmacies will continue opening at 7 a.m. on those days.
  • Meijer stores will extend dedicated shopping times for essential service workers and Meijer team members on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6-8 a.m. local time. Pharmacies will continue opening at 7 a.m. on those days.

Meijer also clarifies that "essential workers" include all medical service personnel, first responders and law enforcement.

On behalf of our essential grocery store employees please let me remind you to be respectful and keep your crazy at bay while doing your grocery shopping. I have been avoiding physically going into stores lately, but the few times I have ventured into one I have been appalled by the behaviors I have seen from some customers. Yelling, cussing, tossing items, making a scene, all unacceptable. We're all frustrated, we all hate wearing masks, we're all OVER the quarantine, but that doesn't give us the right to treat others like garbage. If you simply can't handle being in public right now, don't be. There are delivery and pickup options available, take advantage of them. Rant over.
