Have you ever wondered if you should travel by plane from a cannabis-friendly state like Illinois to a place where it's illegal?

It's A Strange Time When It Comes To Marijuana

When you really think about it, right now is a very strange time when it comes to marijuana laws. Pot is still illegal at the federal level. When it comes to state regulations, it varies from place to place. Plus, in the legal cannabis states the rules are completely different depending on where you go. That makes it kind of confusing.

Illinois Is A Weed Friendly State

Of course, Illinois is all in when it comes to marijuana. Recreational cannabis is legal. There are some regulations but for the most part, it's pretty easy to understand. So you're good to go to have pot throughout the state.

What happens when you leave the state?

Well, if you travel to another weed-friendly state then you are fine. You do have to be careful traveling to a place where it's still illegal. For example, if you head up to Wisconsin with pot, you can still get arrested. I believe it's less likely if you're driving in a car unless you're hot boxing and get pulled over.

What About Flying Out Of Illinois With Cannabis?

I would say it's not the safest thing to do. I suggest not putting yourself in that situation. Especially, if you are traveling to an illegal state. Plus, airports are under federal jurisdiction and they consider it against the law. Those would be stiffer penalties. In Illinois, the airports have drop boxes to dump out your contraband.

Now, there is the thought process that the TSA agents don't care about cannabis. They have much bigger fish to fry. If you're not being an idiot about it, then you should be okay.

Sneaking Weed On An Airplane

Again, I highly suggest not trying because it's not worth the trouble. If you're going to do it, then here are some possible ways to get away with it.

According to thrillist.com,

Stick with smaller quantities. Avoid flower because of the smell. Edibles are your safest bet. Experts suggest putting it in your carry-on and not checking it through. TSA is looking for weapons and liquids, so just don't be so obvious about it. A cigarette pack on the bottom of your bag is a nice hiding spot for joints. Buds could fit in a half-empty pill bottle. Your toiletry kit has lots of camouflage and is perfect for vape pens. Some travelers will put the weed in their shoes or socks. For edibles, sneak them in with your snacks and candy bags. They should fit right in. By the way, CBD is usually okay as long as the state isn't totally conservative.

Remember the safest way is to not do it. No matter what, it's always a risk.
