While living in Illinois, most of us have been learning about tornado safety since we were kids. When the tornado sirens go off, it's a known fact to head to the safest part of your home like the basement or an interior room for protection against the storm.

There is a nightmare scenario that every Illinois resident hopes they never have to face. That's driving during a tornado. What's the safest move to make in a situation like that? Well, finding shelter in a secure building is always your first choice. Unfortunately, that might not be an option. So, what do you do?

Most people think the next best thing is to find an overpass and find shelter there. NEVER do that. It's actually more dangerous. The already dangerous wind will be stronger and faster in an underpass. Plus, you're an easy target for flying debris. There's always the chance of getting trapped under the bridge if it collapses.

If a tornado is coming and you can't find shelter, your best bet is to find the nearest ditch and get as low as possible. Also, make sure you're at a safe distance from your vehicle. Remember, you can't outrun a tornado with a car.
