There are plenty of sights to see but you can just make it a day trip and not worry about spending money on a hotel. We did that a lot when I was growing up. It seems like we were doing that most weekends when I was young.

Chicago is the perfect city for a staycation. It's a short drive with plenty to do. You can even find free activities, take public transportation, or explore on foot. Throw snacks and beverages in the car for later.
