What’s the correct name for this Illinois Potluck Classic?
With Thanksgiving this past weekend kicking off the holiday season, the need for a classic dish to pass is greater than ever. Like every good Midwestern person having a certain item you're in charge of for every get-together is important.
This Illinois Dish Has Been Called By Many Names
My guy's side of the family has never been one to keep up with traditions, and certain items are up for change and ever-rotating. Don't get me wrong; we have some staples, too, that are a must-have every time we get together. But their lack of a cheese tray every year is mind-boggling to me. That's a non-negotiable in my family.

This year I was entrusted with bringing the dinner rolls and new to the menu Frog's Eyes. I knew right away what I needed to make the new menu item, but my kids didn't. I instantly felt like a Mid-West Mom failure because they were unaware of this classic. So like most new food items we talk about, I went to Pinterest to show them the step-by-step on how to make Frog's Eyes.
For those of you asking yourself, what exactly are Frog's Eyes and what are the ingredients, they're deli meat, usually ham or beef, with cream cheese, and pickles. After they're sliced they're supposed to resemble a "frog's eye", hence its name.
To my surprise when I went to find them on Pinterest, I couldn't find them by their name. It came up as something completely different. A name I had never heard these be called by before and I've been enjoying these bad boys at potlucks for a while now. They were coming up as Cowboy Sushi.
Color me surprised to learn that according to Pinterest these were not Forg's Eyes anymore. Well, I say no way to that! They're Frog's Eyes, not Cowboy Sushi! But that got me thinking, what do others call them? Do they say Frog's Eyes or Cowboy Sushi? Do you even bring these to a potluck anymore?
Based on how much of a hit they were at Thanksgiving, I have a feeling I'll be asked to make Frog's Eye again for the next family potluck.
