What Is The Maxwell Street Market In Chicago

If you are not familiar with the Maxwell Street Market in Chicago, then you have been missing out. You could say it was one of the forefathers of the flea market. It started as an impromptu street market featuring local residents trying to start up their own businesses.

According to chicago.gov,

"The Maxwell Street Market is a Chicago tradition with an eclectic mix of handmade crafts, resale housewares and clothing, live music, family fun, and some of the best street food in Chicago."

"Our mission is to promote entrepreneurship and provide opportunities for small businesses, including farmers, artists, makers, restaurateurs, and re-sellers, as we have been doing since 1912."

"You never know what you’re going to find!"

The Maxwell Street Market In Chicago Is Famous

Back in the day, any movies or TV shows filmed in Chicago had at least one scene from the Maxwell Street Market. Many of the iconic Blues legends got their start playing there. In fact, the Maxwell Street Market got on my radar from the "Blues Brothers" when they had a shot of John Lee Hooker playing live on the street.
