Illinois has a lot of history to share through museums, landmarks, displays, and places that are educational and make for great photo ops.

When you spot something along the road that could be considered unusual it is easy to learn if it's a landmark by looking for a plaque or information board nearby.

For instance...

The (Guinness) world record for the largest mailbox is in Casey, Illinois, and a great photo opportunity. Tourists can climb stairs to go into the actual box for a great view. You can also drop a postcard to mail off while inside the giant mailbox and the red flag will go up.

Another interesting piece of history/photo op involves a plane that appears to have crashed.

The "crash site" is located at Highway 71 and E. 25th Road in Norway, Illinois.

Based on the inability to use Google Street View on E. 25th Road, that road appears your safest option for stopping to get out of your vehicle to snap a selfie.

If you saw a smashed-up plane like this on the side of a road you might assume it is symbolic of a crash in that exact spot or somewhere nearby. This, in fact, is not the case.

Though this plane is in the middle of nowhere. surrounded by fields used for farming, it is a representation of the agricultural crash and not a physical plane crash, according to Roadside America.

This isn't the only interesting place you might want to check out.

The plane is a relic of the "Agricultural Crash" of the 1980s...eerily longer-lasting than the Farm Aid concert of 1985.

Here are 12 stops you'll want to make this year, one for each month.
