One morning I was leaving to go to work and I noticed a small bird, I believe it was a finch, walking on the driveway. I thought it was strange that it didn't move or fly away as I approached it.

I got closer and as I watched it attempt to fly, I noticed that something didn't seem right. As the bird would get about three inches or so off the ground, it would fall out of the sky. It kept trying, but did not succeed. I told my husband and the animal lover in him took action.

That afternoon my husband said he saw the same bird in the driveway still attempting to fly. He put it in a shoebox and brought it to the local animal sanctuary. They asked if he would like to be kept informed of what would happen to the bird and he said yes.

About a week later we got a post card in the mail saying the bird was euthanize because it had some sort of problem and I just cried. Here we thought we were doing something good, yet the poor birdy died. I felt terrible.

Many moons later, I came across a story today that warmed my heart. As you know, traveling the local interstates is always a headache. ALWAYS.

There was a bit of commotion on I-55 this morning.

In Darien the Illinois Department of Transportation is doing something similar, taking care of a beautiful bird.

This morning they were seen moving an injured bald eagle from traffic on I-55.

During the morning commute, along inbound I-55 near the ramp to southbound Cass Avenue, a bald eagle was moved into a grassy area near the expressway. Traffic was not closed, but the crew did park a truck near the ramp next to the bird to protect it while they waited for help according to ABC7.

I hope when they are informed of the fate of the bald eagle, they are told it has been healed of it's ailments and it will fly on for many years to come.
