Many of us missed out on our traditional Easter celebrations this year thanks to the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, and now we're looking at much lower-key Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations because of it too.

If you have family members who are still coming home for Thanksgiving, or you have kids coming home from college, there are some things health experts say you should all be doing NOW in preparation for a safe and COVID-free turkey day.

Dr. Lucian Davis, an associate professor of epidemiology at the Yale School of Public Health recently told TODAY Health the best thing we can all do in preparation for Thanksgiving is to quarantine ourselves for 14 days prior to heading home...so basically, start quarantining right now.  This advice especially goes for students away at college and coming home soon for Fall break. Dr. Davis told TODAY;

I think that you can sensibly minimize your risk by wearing a mask and cleaning your hands and practicing the other things that we know are important, like distancing," he said. "I don't think you can eliminate risk, but I think you want to try to do everything you can do minimize your risk.

Dr. Davis also told TODAY not to rely on a negative COVID test as your ticket to safety;

Let's just say you test negative and you have permission to go home. But then once you get home, you might develop symptoms and in the period even before that you might be spreading to your family.

Right now I NEED to spend time with close family as a reminder that we still have so much to be thankful for. I'm sure you feel the same way, so go forth and celebrate, just be safe and smart while you do it.
