THE CHICAGO RIVER FLOWS BACKWARDS?

The solution was both ambitious and groundbreaking. In 1900, engineers from the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal completed a project that reversed the flow of the Chicago River. Instead of flowing into Lake Michigan, the river was redirected towards the Mississippi River Basin. This change was achieved by constructing a canal that connected the river to the Des Plaines River, which naturally flowed southwest. By lowering the water levels in the canal, the river's direction was reversed, preventing the city's waste from entering Lake Michigan.

This reversal not only safeguarded Chicago’s drinking water but also facilitated commercial navigation, making the city a vital transportation hub. The project represented a major milestone in civil engineering and environmental management.
