Everyone on the internet is arguing with each other over the answer to a simple math problem.

I'm about to lose it. Someone please tell me the answer to this math problem.

I'm 20 seconds away from Facebook messaging my high school math teacher, Mrs. Biggs, for the answer.

The math problem is:

6 ÷ 2(1 + 2)

My initial response is that the answer is 1. But after I thought about it a bit more, maybe, just maybe, the answer is 9?

Why? Well here is my thinking:

The Order of Operations is something you need to know first. Mrs. Biggs always taught us the phrase, "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally," which meant "Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplications, Division, Addition, Subtraction."

If I use this logic, I get the answer of 1. Here's how:

6 ÷ 2(1 + 2)

6 ÷ 2(3)

6 ÷ 6 = 1

But, wait just one minute here... if this is the case? Why are some people getting the answer of 9? Here's how:

6 ÷ 2(2 + 1)

6 ÷ 2(3)

6 ÷ 2 x 3

3 x 3 = 9

To get the answer of 9, the Order of Operations are being followed. Multiplication and Division are considered equal, so does this mean you would calculate from left to right, resulting in the answer of 9?

Wait a minute, but my gut tells me that the answer of 1 is correct!? I was always told to trust my instincts. Instincts don't fail me now!

So, which answer is correct!? HELP!
