From the New York Times a scientific study was done where 22 adults were given a bunch of booze, and then their phone was attached to their lower backs.They got up and walked around, and the smartphone could tell by the way they walked if they were drunk or not.

Researchers said the 90% of the time they could confirm that the adult was indeed drunk.

 “We found preliminary evidence supporting use of gait-related features measured by smartphone accelerometer sensors to detect alcohol intoxication, this underutilized ability of the smartphone could help people reduce their alcohol consumption, allow sponsors to better monitor alcoholics’ habits and prevent drinking and driving." - Dr. Brian Suffoletto

 

The next step in this research is to have the phone in a persons hand or pocket, to see if the same results are reached. Have a person that is lit attach their phone to the small of their back, probably won't work well.
