You're married, either have kids or planning on having a few, and you want to live somewhere you know that they will be safe.

But did you know, you don't have to move out of Illinois to make that happen?

An interesting study done by AdvisorSmith took a "deep dive into determining the safest small, midsize, and large cities in the U.S."

While there wasn't one city in Illinois that ranked in the top 10, there are six that showed up on the list, including one other that was a definite eye-opener.

For small cities, Lindenhurst was considered the safest. They ranked 66th overall, followed by Palo HIlls at #74 and Homer Glen at #87.

When it came to midsize cities, again, three Illinois towns made the list. Naperville at 62nd followed by Joliet at #79 and Aurora at #83.

Based on the metrics AdvisorSmith put together, looking at violent crimes, and property crimes per 1,000 people and coming up with a "Crime Score," it appears all six are good spots in Illinois if you want to stay safe-ish.

When it came to large cities, I have to say, I was stunned to see where AdvisorSmith had placed Chicago.

Anyone who follows the news knows Chicago is a violent city, and depending on who you ask, one of the worst in the U.S., but apparently not quite as bad as the rest when you take a closer look at the numbers.

According to AdvisorSmith's calculations, violent crimes occur to just about 10 in every 1,000 people in Chicago, while property crimes happen to just a hair over 22 people per 1,000 giving The Windy City a stunning "Crime Score" of 84.5.

Ranked as the 25th safest big city in America, Chicago was right between Omaha (NE) and Fresno (CA).

What do you think? Is Chicago overrated when it comes to crime stats? If you lived there would you consider yourself safe? Tell us.
