The Rockford Park District has had their fingers and toes crossed ever since the news broke back in October that an agreement had been made for Six Flags to take over operations of Magic Waters Waterpark.

This lease deal is entirely contingent on 11 taxing authorities in Winnebago County agreeing to extend the abatement of real estate taxes on the property. If all 11 bodies do not agree, the deal is squashed and the future of Magic Waters will be severely at risk.

So far, the Rockford Park District Board of Commissioners, Rockford Township Board of Trustees, Rockford Township Highway Board, and the Winnebago County Board have approved the extension, and several more taxing bodies will be voting on the issue in the next week or so.

Rockford Park District Executive Director Jay Sandine told the Rockford Register Star;

We’d like a full abatement by the end of November.

Six Flags is literally waiting for this to happen so they can make employment offers to our team members, so they can start their marketing machine and start advertising their season passes and invest in the park,  they’re not going to do that until we get that abatement

The RRStar reports that the Forest Preserves of Winnebago County voted on the tax break Monday night and that the Rockford School Board is scheduled to vote on the matter tonight.

Over the next two weeks the Rock Valley College Board of Trustees, Cherry Valley Fire Protection District, Cherry Valley Library District, Greater Rockford Airport Authority and the Rock River Water Reclamation District will all be voting on whether or not to extend the tax break for Six Flags, so we shall know the fate of Magic Waters very soon.
