Lincoln Mall, once a thriving shopping hub in Matteson, IL, opened in 1973 as a symbol of suburban growth and prosperity. In its prime, it was home to major department stores like Carson Pirie Scott, JCPenney, and Montgomery Ward, and was a popular destination for South Suburban shoppers. The mall featured more than 100 stores, a bustling food court, and seasonal events that attracted families from the surrounding areas.

However, as the years passed, the mall faced increasing challenges.

The decline of the traditional brick-and-mortar retail model in the face of growing e-commerce, coupled with economic downturns, left Lincoln Mall vulnerable. Anchor stores began closing, starting with Montgomery Ward in the early 2000s, followed by other key retailers. As the mall's occupancy rate dropped, its ability to attract new tenants dwindled, leading to a steady decline in foot traffic.

By the late 2000s, Lincoln Mall was a shadow of its former self, with many storefronts vacant and sections of the mall in disrepair. Ownership changes and failed redevelopment plans did little to reverse the trend. The final blow came in 2015 when a judge ordered the mall’s closure due to safety and maintenance concerns. The structure had deteriorated to the point where it was no longer viable to remain open.

Despite efforts to redevelop the land, Lincoln Mall was ultimately demolished in 2017, marking the end of an era. For many local residents, the mall's demise reflects the broader challenges facing aging suburban malls across America. It stands as a reminder of the changing landscape of retail and the impact that economic shifts can have on once-thriving communities. Today, the site remains vacant, leaving a nostalgic void for those who remember Lincoln Mall in its heyday.
