Simplified Snow Alerts in Rockford: What You Need to Know
Are you a long-term Rockford, Illinois resident who still gets confused whenever the City declares a "Snow Emergency" during the winter? Don't worry, you're not alone, and things are about to change.
Snow Emergency Panic
To me, anytime the word "emergency" is used in an official capacity, my blood pressure rises several notches.
I believe the word "emergency" should only be used in extreme circumstances because it can cause mild panic, yet a "snow emergency" gets issued several times during the winter in the Stateline area.

What exactly is a "Snow Emergency"?
Am I supposed to run to the store and buy out all the eggs, milk, and toilet paper, OR am I simply supposed to move my parked car to a certain side of the street?
It can be a confusing situation for many Rockford residents, and the City of Rockford has decided to get rid of some of the confusion.
New Winter Weather Terminology in Rockford
Several times every winter, the City of Rockford declares a "Snow Emergency", which is a standard term used when plows hit the roads and cars need to be parked on odd/even sides of the street.
Sometimes snow emergencies are declared for a little bit of snow/ice, and other times they are declared for massive winter storms, but that is changing effective immediately in Rockford.
A post from the City of Rockford says:
Going forward, we will declare “Odd/Even Parking Restrictions are in effect”, instead of using the term “Snow Emergency” for routine residential plowing. The term “Snow Emergency” will be reserved only for major winter storms, when travel is strongly discouraged and residents are advised to remain off the roads unless absolutely necessary.
I don't know if other towns and villages in the Stateline area will follow Rockford when it comes to changing winter terminology, but I sure hope they do!
