If you receive a concerning text from The Illinois Tollway, double check to confirm it's the real deal.  Here's everything you need to know about this new phishing scam targeting Illinois I-PASS users.

Scammers have all sorts of new technology and ways to look extremely convincing.  From stealing card information online, to gift card blackmailing and counterfeit money scams, this newest one could be the one most people would tend to fall for.

On the Illinois Tollway's official website, they have a huge advisory at the top of the page that warns about the phishing scam.

"The Illinois Tollway is advising I-PASS customers to disregard phishing texts being sent to their phones from “Illinois toll way” that detail a specific outstanding toll amount. If you receive a text and are unsure, please login below or call our customer service center at 1-800-UC-IPASS (1-800-824-7277) from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays. I-PASS customers should delete any text that you receive stating an outstanding toll amount." [getipass.com]

Tons of customers have received text messages from the "Illinois Toll Way" saying they have outstanding balances past due on their accounts.  The message then prompts customers to pay the remaining balance to avoid any additional charges and fees on a fraudulent website.

If you've received this message and clicked on the website, you'd see that the scammers are trying to collect your car information to use unlawfully.

The Illinois Tollway advises customers who have received the phishing text to file a complaint at ic3.gov.  If your information has been stolen, please file a police report with your local department, as well.
