The United States Postal Service (USPS) has implemented new pricing for various mailing services, marking another step in their ongoing efforts to achieve financial stability as part of their "Delivering for America" 10-year plan. The changes include a notable 5-cent increase in the price of a First-Class Mail Forever stamp, raising it from 68 cents to 73 cents. This is the sixth increase in the last three years, making the cost of mailing a letter 33% higher than it was in July 2021.

What Other Prices Increased?

The overall adjustments will raise mailing services product prices by approximately 7.8%. Along with the Forever stamp, other price changes include increases for domestic postcards from 53 cents to 56 cents and international postcards from $1.55 to $1.65. The price for an additional ounce for single-piece letters will rise from 24 cents to 28 cents.

Certified Mail and money order fees will also see increases, with Certified Mail rising from $4.40 to $4.85, and Return Receipt fees increasing for both retail and electronic options. Notably, there will be no price increase for PO Box rental fees, and a 10% price reduction will be applied to postal insurance when mailing an item.

What Does USPS Say About The Increases?

These changes come as USPS continues to adjust to the evolving mailing and shipping marketplace, aiming to maintain financial health while keeping its services among the most affordable worldwide.

Our business and operating models are unsustainable and out of step with the changing needs of the nation and our customers. Years of chronic underinvestment in our infrastructure and network have taken its toll on our performance and workforce. As we implement rate changes, USPS remains committed to making sure mailing and shipping rates remain among the most affordable in the world. -USPS

Looking Ahead

The USPS has emphasized that these price adjustments are necessary to ensure the continued provision of reliable and affordable postal services. While the price hikes may be unwelcome news for many, they reflect the broader economic challenges facing the postal service.

For consumers and businesses, staying informed about these changes and adjusting their mailing and shipping practices accordingly will be crucial. Exploring cost-saving measures, such as bulk mailing discounts or alternative shipping providers, can help mitigate the impact of the price increases.
