5 Illinois Highways Rank Among Top 100 Deadliest In America
Hey so people can't drive safely.
When we're driving on an interstate or highway, at least once an hour (or once every 15 minutes), we think to ourselves 'what is that dude even doing??' They'll brake check you, won't let you pass, the list of moronic transgressions goes on and on.
It becomes a serious issue when some of these circumstances lead to fatal crashes.
Recent numbers from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Fatality Analysis Reporting System (obtained by Fox32 Chicago) show the U.S. highways that have seen the highest numbers of fatal crashes in the last 3 years.
Here are the 5 Illinois highways that made the national list and where they rank overall:
- I-94 (52 crashes, rank #4)
- I-57 (26 crashes, rank #41)
- I-290 (24 crashes, rank #53)
- I 294 & I-90 (21 crashes, tie #89)
I-94, which goes right through the Chicago metro, is one of the most congested urban corridors in the country (if you've been in it around the holidays, you know). Besides the weather, the stop-and-go traffic and attempts to merge are what contribute to the interstate's rank. But the rank could have been worse.
In case you're wondering where not to drive, the deadliest roadway is I-15 in San Bernardino County, California. It's a busy corridor between L.A. and Vegas.
More than 38,000 people die on U.S. roads every year, according to the NHTSA. The main causes of the crashes are fatigue, speeding, and distracted driving. So you may not be the best driver on the planet, but you can for sure put down your phone.
