I've seen homes do this over the years, but only recently realized that it was only happening during the month of October. Why do Missouri homes choose to display purple porch lights? The truth is sad.

I want to be clear that I think it's awesome that people take the time to do this. I just had no idea what it meant and got curious after I saw a colleague of mine explore the same topic in New York.

What is the real meaning behind purple porch lights in Missouri?

Taste of Home explains that the purple lighting during October is a symbol actually for several things. Primarily, it's to raise awareness of domestic violence since October is domestic violence awareness month.

But wait, there's more. Many choose to display purple lights even beyond October as a sign that their home is a safe haven for those seeking shelter.

Note that it's possible that someone with a unique colored porch light could be doing it just for decorations and/or something seasonal. But, more often than not it's a family that is choosing to support a cause. In the case of purple porch lights, it's a symbol that those who suffer at the hands of domestic violence are not alone and have those who are more than willing to help.
