Four years ago I learned that the toughest person in my neighborhood was the six year old girl next door.

Her name is Ellie, I call her My Homie and my best friend. Four years ago she went through a change that altered her life, but realistically it made her tougher and even more more driven.

Around Thanksgiving her mother knew something was wrong, so she had her blood sugars checked at home, and was taken to her pediatrician. Labs were drawn and Ellie was directly admitted to the children's hospital in Madison.  Here, she learned that from this day forward, she had a disease that she could control, not one that would control her.

Its been quite a journey for My Homie, but how can you not admire a little girl so full of life and smiles.  She grew up quickly. Became very independent with the snap of a finger.  She learned to count her carbs and recognize signs of hypoglycemia, all while learning her math facts in first grade.  She stays active, participates in all types of activities with her pump in tow. Oh, and she keeps me in check.

Today we recognize World Diabetes Day, if you have any questions about Type 1 Diabetes please go to JDRF.
